The Sea Org

What is the Sea Org?
“The core of every great religion in history has been a group of individuals dedicated to achieving the goals of the religion. In Scientology, these individuals are part of a fraternal religious order known as the Sea Organization, or Sea Org. While relatively few in number, its members play a crucial role in virtually every aspect of the ministry and expansion of Scientology. And, like their counterparts in other faiths, Sea Organization members occupy the most essential and trusted positions in the senior churches in the Scientology ecclesiastical hierarchy.” - What is Scientology? 1
Most Sea Org members were born into Scientology families, as such they “know” that nothing is more certain than the doctrine of Scientology. Sea Org members are incredibly devoted to Scientology.
“The Sea Org’s organizational structure is an odd mixture of military and corporate management styles, with staff members living in army-like conditions, receiving boot-camp type punishments for misdeeds, and holding militaristic titles within the organization.” - Ex Scientology Kids 2
Billion-year Contract
“The first Sea Org members, who were all Clears and OTs, formulated a one-billion-year pledge to symbolize their commitment to the religion as immortal spiritual beings. It is signed by all members today. They dedicate themselves to the goal of bringing spiritual freedom to all beings through the full application of Mr. Hubbard’s technologies. The Sea Organization was born of a concern for the welfare of mankind — and it is with this viewpoint that members of the Sea Org continue to operate.” - What is Scientology? 3
This multiple-lifetime contract means that Sea Org members are expected to rejoin in all subsequent lives. The legality of said contract is a subject of much debate.
MV Freewinds
MV Freewinds is a cruise ship which has been used by Scientology for the last two decades for the teaching of many high-level Scientology courses. It has also been well used by the Sea Org, who had sold their naval fleet prior to Scientology’s acquisition of the Freewinds.
In April 2008, the Freewinds was grounded after a maintenence company discovered the use of blue asbestos in construction. Thousands of Scientologists have been aboard MV Freewinds, and as such thousands are now at risk of developing a cancer known as Mesothelioma.
“There is not now and never has been a situation of asbestos exposure on the Freewinds.” - Scientology Spokesperson
The natural response for an organisation which has exposed its members to cancer-causing asbestos would be to inform those who have been aboard and ask them to seek medical attention. Instead, the Church of Scientology is neglecting to tell their members about the asbestos problem and huge health risks for those who have taken courses aboard the Freewinds.
